The Paddock and Kemp's Cottage

This area to the North East of Bush Way is just outside the Site of Special Scientific Interest but is designated as a Site of Biological Importance; on old maps it is identified as “The Paddock”. The meadow is fed by a stream from The Cave (on the corner of Thurstaston Road and Oldfield Road) and it is possible to identify plants not found elsewhere in the Nature Reserve. It is favoured by butterflies on warm summer days.

Kemp’s Cottage was located at the top of Bush Way and was a popular subject for many early postcards of Heswall Dales. The cottage was occupied by William Kemp (1798–1863) and his wife Jane whom he married in 1821. This smallholding and common grazing rights on Heswall Dales could have proved invaluable to William in pursuing his trade as a butcher and to help feed his wife and their 14 children. The cottage was demolished some time before the 1950s. (Adapted from "The History of Heswall Dales" by Roger Lane and Jenny McRonald of The Heswall Society)
