Over the last two months the Rangers and volunteers have cleared most of this area of gorse and birch which has revealed some wonderful views of the Dee estuary and the rest of the Dales.
There's always more to do on the Dales - could you spare some time on Wednesdays to volunteer? Call Ranger Chris Werney on 07767 474478.
BTW the Friends will have a stand at the forthcoming "Nature on your Doorstep" event to be hosted at Heswall Hall by Heswall U3A on 8th April from 0930 to 11.30FOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-1515446690800705972024-02-16T07:26:00.000-08:002024-02-16T07:30:06.576-08:00Site Maintenance
Some parts of our web site (e.g. maps) will be offline on Wednesday 21st February between 20:00 and 23:30. They saw at first hand the amount of dog dirt and were reminded what it can do to the fragile ecosystem of our "hidden gem".....and how ineffective current enforcement is. The council is reviewing its enforcement policy in the new year: we shall be continuing to monitor the situation and encourage an improved approach. Thanks again to all who signed the petition. He agreed the sites of the bat boxes with the Ranger and very kindly donated five bat boxes which are now installed near the Turtle's Head and near the Birch Steps. Why the need? Modern building techniques mean that available sites for bats to roost in are in decline: we are fortunate that there are still three types of bat in Heswall - the Common Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle and Noctule.
If you have an interest in bats you might consider joining the Bat Conservation Trust va the local group, the Merseyside & West Lancashire Bat Group via www.batgroup.org.ukFOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-49813208465900411172023-10-31T03:01:00.000-07:002023-10-31T03:01:20.945-07:00Working togetherThe Friends have been working with Heswall Councillors to draw on Wirral Council's "Working together" fund to purchase materials and equipment to replace the time-expired burning platform: this is essential for disposing of the large amounts of brash generated in managing the heathland (see the last Newsletter).
Well done all!FOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-23126995333650540682023-09-29T10:32:00.002-07:002023-09-29T10:32:56.276-07:00Help the Dales - volunteers neededThe Dales depends on volunteer effort and with the autumn now underway, there's a lot needed to be done. Could you help?
Preserve a rare environment, home to a variety of plants, insects, reptiles, birds and small mammals, get physical and mental well-being from open air work with wonderful views over the Dee estuary and
get the satisfaction of making a visible difference, working alongside people from a range of background and carrying out a variety of tasks throughout the year.
We meet at the Ranger's Cottage every Wednesday at 10.00 and work on until about 15.00 - but if you can only make the morning or afternoon, that's fine too.

The reply indictated that our approach was timely, as a review of Council enforcement policy will be taking place this autumn. Let's see how this develops.....many thanks to all who signed and to local councillors for their continuing support. This now gives an improved circular route which leads up to and down from the path to the Heswall Society bench/viewpoint. Sadly, part of the pleasure of this walk has been lost because of the recent fires, which have severely damaged large areas of heathland on the eastern edge of the Dales. Despite some recent rain, the ground surface across the Dales remains dry and flammable. Please take care.

Many thanks to the Heswall Society for their contribution to the cost of the replacement Birch Steps.
FOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-59123230999282123292022-07-29T06:53:00.000-07:002022-07-29T06:53:38.796-07:00Another Green Flag award for the Dales
Heswall Dales has been awarded another Green Flag following an inspection visit earlier in the summer, describing the Dales as "a pleasure to visit" and praising the co-operative approach to work on the Dales between the local authority, volunteers and the Friends. Well done everyone!
FOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-82365700694428443382022-06-13T09:31:00.002-07:002022-06-13T09:33:14.516-07:00Five years old!/June Newsletter/What else?
We launched the Friends of Heswall Dales five years ago. Our recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) looked at what has been achieved since then (Chair's report) well as reviewing the current state of the rare and varied ecosystem of the Dales (Nature report). You can see both of these in the June Newsletter. (The AGM minutes will be circulated to members shortly.)

What else? - Work in the Dales has now shifted for the summer to path maintenance including tackling the restoration of the "birch steps" at the top of the woodland valley north from Bushway. The recent Green Flag review went well - we'll get the formal results in a few weeks.
FOHDNMIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09306543558238304102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-28973452137784834192022-03-04T10:19:00.000-08:002022-03-04T10:19:22.259-08:00More progress on the Dales
Work to clear and widen the path from the Oldfield Road entrance up to and beyond the granite bench has continued, giving great views across the estuary and across the heathland on the inland side. Access for equipment is much improved – the Wirral Council Land Rover and trailer can now get much further - and disposing of cut material has been carried out locally using the portable burning platform – saving a huge amount of time and labour compared to moving it all back to the Ranger’s Cottage. In addition, the Ranger team based at Thurstaston works flexibly and can concentrate its Dales’ work on particular days, especially volunteering sessions on Wednesdays. The result? Lots of progress. Go and have a look – and there’s still plenty of work for volunteers if you would like some first class Green Gym: call Ranger Chris Werney on 07767 474478.

What else? Our appeal for funds for the planned Dales lectern has gone out to our members, but if you’re not a member and would like to donate please let us know: http://friendsheswalldales@gmail.com

The recent storms have done little damage (Arwen cleared out the more vulnerable trees) but dog dirt remains a problem as does an outbreak of wild camping (leaving a huge mess) near the Rock Face round the corner from the Piper’s Lane entrance. If you see anything please let the Ranger know.

But spring is now near – just listen to the birdsong. How many species can you recognise?

Friends of Heswall Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531254537406154862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-27438129049738533132021-12-16T08:15:00.001-08:002021-12-16T08:15:41.516-08:00Happy Christmas and New Year to all and a quick update
Work on the Dales has carried on through the recent bad weather as the volunteers and the Rangers continue to clear scrub near the marble bench and on the path down from Quarry Road West. The clearance has greatly improved the views over the Dee estuary and across some of the heather panels and has also improved the access for the Ranger's vehicles. The work has been well received by Dales walkers and by Natural England (the statutory body that looks after Sites of Special Scientific Interest like the Dales) who visited recently. For more info on recent and planned work see the recent Friends Newsletter.

Best wishes to all - enjoy the Dales and keep safe.
Friends of Heswall Daleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531254537406154862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5475045446950218111.post-3412697260573514042021-12-10T06:15:00.008-08:002022-03-07T06:19:15.910-08:00November newsletter

This award recognises the quality of the work done at the Dales in the
management of the site and promoting and encouraging its use. It reflects the
efforts of Wirral Council (especially local team manager Luke Bithell and Ranger
Chris Werney), the Dales volunteers and the Dales Friends group. Well done
everyone! We do actually receive a Green Flag and are now looking for the best
place to site the flag-pole!
